O'Donel Levy - Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (1973)
The butt-squeezing cover should be enough to let you know that this is one funky album -- but if that doesn't get the message across, the grooves certainly do! O'Donel Levy plays tight and funky guitar, and also sings a bit on the set -- working with a tight combo that features Charles Covington on keyboards, and some great electric funk arrangements by Dave Matthews! An explosive late '70s set with underrated composer, multi-instrumentalist, and arranger Sam Rivers leading a strong quartet. While bassist and cellist Dave Holland and percussionist Thurman Barker merged to form a strong, challenging rhythm section, Rivers and Joe Daley, playing tuba and baritone horn, worked together to create instrumental dialogues in sequence. Their array of contrasting voicings, with Rivers on tenor and soprano sax and flute, makes for compelling listening. download
Gary Burton - Good Vibes (1969)
Gary Burton hits a sweet electric funky sound here, a great groove that really makes the album stand out from most of his other work! The support Burton gets is a big reason for the greatness of the date, as he's working in a group that includes Eric Gale on guitar, Richard Tee on piano and organ, Chuck Rainey on bass, and Bernard Purdie on drums. The album's got a bit of trippiness to it, kind of in the style of some of Herbie Mann's funky production work for the Vortex label, and a few cuts have producer Joel Dorn working with Arif Mardin on the cuts, giving them a more expansive sound that pushes Burton's playing nicely. The vibes have a dark chromatic quality to them that sounds great next to the sweeter playing of the funky player, and the record's filled with nice numbers. download
